If Our Children Knew Early On That They Are Accountable To God

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 14: 1

“that if the Gentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God…”

Obedience is the first law of heaven and it should be the first law of the home.

President Boyd K. Packer said, “You do not talk about obedience unless you talk about authority, and you do not talk about obedience and authority unless you talk about agency.”

What a powerful thing to teach your children from an early age that there is a higher authority than themselves. What if your children felt accountable to God as a child and felt keenly that God is the ultimate authority? That would change the course of their life.

President Packard also said discipline starts from without. However, eventually and hopefully sooner than later discipline must come from within. Therefore, parents must have patience with children and understand the nature of children. Children are not born with discipline and this is something they must learn with the help of their parents.

If we can create a home that has overcome the world then our children will not be afflicted with the distractions of the world. And, they will more likely exercise their agency by choosing God over worldly and superficial interests.

President Packard also said, “Obedience to God can be the very highest obedience of independence. Just think of giving to him the one thing, the one gift, that He would never take…Obedience- that which God will never take by force- He will accept when freely given. And He will then return to you freedom that you can hardly dream of- the freedom to feel and to know, the freedom to do, and the freedom to be, at least a thousandfold more than we offer Him. Strangely enough, the key to freedom is obedience.”
