Becoming Perfect

Perfection Is A Process That We Should Work Toward And Not Feel Anxiety With The Magnitude Of The Challenge

Jesus Christ Topical Guide: Sermon On The Mount Series

Matthew 5:48

“Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.”

Being perfect like God is not possible in this life. However, we should be working towards it. This is why it will take us a lifetime of repentance and scripture study. An important reason for feasting on the scriptures is to learn what we need to change, which is the definition of repentance. The scriptures help us see what God sees and have His mind.

Elder Holland in his October 17 talk said perfection is a process that we accomplish little by little each day. We need a correct perspective on perfection. We should strive to be perfect like Christ; however, we must understand that Jesus was a God and we are not. This doesn’t mean that we can’t make significant growth through Jesus’ Atonement and grace.

We should not feel anxiety about the enormity of this charge to become perfect. Also, we shouldn’t throw our hands up saying it is impossible. Instead, we should take personal and family scripture study and prayer very serious. We should take this teaching to heart;

“Feasting on the word of God each day is more important than sleep, school, work, television shows, video games, or social media. You may need to reorganize your priorities to provide time for the study of the word of God. If so, do it!” Elder Richard G. Scott

I think there is a difference between becoming perfect like Christ and perfection in Christ. We will not be perfect like Christ in this life, but we can be perfect in Christ. For example, when we are feeling sad and discouraged we can turn to Christ in scriptures and prayer instead of the world.

Satan teaches us not to pray. Therefore, prayer may feel like a battle most days. If we are determined, Jesus Christ can be our healer instead of Satan’s fake imitations.
