How And Why To Convert Our Families

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

2 Nephi 4: 12

“And it came to pass after my father, Lehi, had spoken unto all his household, according to the feelings of his heart and the Spirit of the Lord which was in him.”

According To The Feelings Of His Heart

Our focus in the home should be on conversion and developing the powers of real faith. If we want faithful and powerful children we must help them get the word of God from the head into the heart. Learning and conversion happens when focus on feelings and not just the words.

Reading and listening only is not learning or revelation.

Only our children can build their own faith, but our leadership through effective family scripture study will help significantly. When God’s love pierces their hearts during family scripture study they will hunger for His love always, and will seek after Him on their own.

Converting Our Children To The Lord

We will not convert our children. The Holy Ghost will. Therefore, we must give the Holy Ghost every opportunity to pierce their hearts.

The quicker our children are converted to Christ and know Him; the faster they will start to truly live. Life begins when we “behold the man.” It shouldn’t take us until we are 70 or 80 to know Christ. Why not pay the price to gain eternal life before our bodies start to wear down.

For example, in some ways our 60’s and 70’s are the prime of life. Hopefully, by then we have given up the world and the childish things. Spiritual power requires a price to pay and that takes time. President Eyring taught that these blessings are available to every priesthood man. He acknowledged that some say these are impossible; however, he promised they are available and we should seek them, and ponder how we can realize these incredible powers and blessings. Hold all the spiritual blessings of the church.

  • Have the privilege of receiving the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • Have the Heavens opened to you.
  • Commune with the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn.
  • Enjoy the communion and presence of God the Father, and Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant.
  • Receive the power of Godliness.
  • See the face of God and live.
  • Break mountains.
  • Divide the seas.
  • Dry up waters and turn them out of their course.
  • Put at defiance the armies of nations.
  • Divide the earth.
  • Break every band.
  • Stand in the presence of God.
  • Do all things according to His command.
  • Subdue principalities and powers.

Referring to the above powers, President Eyring said; “One way to respond to such awe-inspiring descriptions of the power of the priesthood is to assume that they do not apply to us. Another way to respond is with soul-searching questions….. Such introspection always brings a feeling that we could be doing more in the service of the Lord. I hope it also brings you a feeling that you want to do more—a longing to participate more fully in the Lord’s miraculous work. Such feelings are the first step toward becoming the kind of men that priesthood service is meant to produce.”

Time is sacred! We can never make it up. The two hours we spent watching a movie we are not getting back. That was time we could have spent strengthening our faith. Two hours of giving God our full attention to His word without multi-tasking is powerful time.

We can’t undo years of wasted time; but we can repent.
