How To Overcome A Dysfunctional Home

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 20:18

“O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments- then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea.”

A river is symbolic of something powerful. There are many dysfunctional families and therefore they suffer in deep pain, which causes many children to live in misery. Additionally, sadly, sometimes the parents are abusive.

However, all that is required for peace in the home is to keep the commandments. This is really not difficult and the Lord has not given us that many commandments. Furthermore, we should be grateful for every commandment and desire more commandments. For example, God only gives us commandments to bless us and increase our joy and happiness. Ultimate success in life is in following His plan.

Righteousness As The Waves Of The Sea

Righteousness is the true way to power and influence. Many homes are dysfunctional and racked with pain because the father (sometimes the mother) leads with unrighteous dominion. However, a righteous man who walks with the Lord is a man (or woman) whose family will follow.
