We Exercise Agency By Praying

Prayer Is How You Invite God Into Your Life

Jesus Christ Topical Guide: Sermon On The Mount Series

Matthew 6:8

“for your Father knoweth what things ye have in need of, before ye ask them.”

I know some people who seem to think they can order God around and demand blessings because of their obedience. It is true that God said He is obligated when we do what He says. However, His blessings and invention comes at His time and in His way.

Why is this significant? God knows all things and He sees everything; therefore, we don’t pray to let Him know what is happening. He already knows.

We pray to invite Him in and to allow Him to help us.

Prayer is a way to exercise our agency. However, He will not force Himself into our life or infringe on our agency. He is a shepherd not a sheepherder.

Elder Cornish said, “I am led to believe that our Heavenly Father loves us so much that the things that are important to us become important to Him, just because He loves us. How much more would He want to help us with the big things that we ask, which are right….,please believe how very much your loving Heavenly Father wants to bless you. But because He will not infringe upon our agency, we must ask for His help. This is generally done through prayer.”

Also, the Bible Dictionary says this about prayer; “The object of prayer is not to change the will of God but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant but that are made conditional on our asking for them. Blessings require some work or effort on our part before we can obtain them. Prayer is a form of work and is an appointed means for obtaining the highest of all blessings.”
