Doing The Lord’s Will

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

2 Nephi 2:7

“unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered.”

Broken Heart And Contrite Spirit

This is what the Lord asks us to sacrifice instead of the old Law of Moses practice of sacrificing animals.

What does a broken heart and contrite spirit mean? It means submitting our will to His. The scriptures and Apostles teach that Eternal Life is given only to those who do His will. They point out that doing good works is not enough. President Eyring said;

“So, as much as we have already built faith and courage in our hearts, the Lord expects more from us- and from the generations after us. They will need to be stronger and braver because they will do even greater and harder things than we have done. And they will face increasing opposition from the enemy of our souls.”

The Lord Expects More From Us

He expects more from us because The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the only church with priesthood power. Therefore, it is the only way to gain the power of Godliness through the ordinances in the temple.

Making and keeping covenants with God separates you from the world. This doesn’t mean God loves others less; however, it means there are blessings and opportunities available for those who keep covenants; and therefore, greater expectations for covenant keepers. Covenant keepers are the anointed! Anointed to be instruments in His hands. Anointed to do impossible things.

How does this relate to marriage and family?

Parent’s example tremendously impacts children. Children still have their agency and some rebel despite the righteousness and example of parents. If your children see that you place covenants as a priority and above feelings; and that they can see the power of Godliness in you they will also want this for themselves.
