Protect Your Home By Establishing Family Standards

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 21: 22

“and set up my standard to the people;”

Families need standards! The parents are the leaders in the home and the father is the prophet for his family. Therefore, he has the right to receive revelation for his family, if he is righteous. You and your wife should council together frequently to create a vision for your family.

What kind of legacy will you leave when you die? What do you want to be known for?

What Are Your Standards

Pornography is Satan’s weapon of mass destruction! Morality is one of the most important standards to set because it directly effects our happiness in this life and our life in the eternities.

Pornography is not something we can take lightly, and you cannot be passive or complacent about pornography. This is a drug that does more damage and destruction to the individual and society than any of the other drugs. So far, at least two states in America have declared pornography a public health crisis.

What should you do if you have a child in pornography? Lovingly support him and help him repent and overcome.

Protecting Your Home From Pornography

There are many ways to protect your home. For example, you can buy filters to protect your entire home. This means every electronic device that enters your home is automatically filtered. However, once that device such as a laptop or cell phone leaves the home it is no longer safe. Therefore, the best bet is to also buy or download free software for each computer and digital device that is used outside the home.

The Gospel Of Jesus Christ Changes Behavior Faster Than Anything Else

God’s word must be our standard and His commandments our measuring rod for how we live our life! Doing whatever we want and what feels good is a plan of spiritual death.

This world is filled with very perplexing problems. And it cannot possibly solve them. However, the gospel can solve all the problems of life. The scriptures teach us all things that we should do.

What else…?

What standards will you set in work ethic, education and cleanliness? Elder D. Todd Christofferson gave a talk about consecration and listed five areas we should consecrate our lives. These are good areas to make family standards.

  1. Purity
  2. Work
  3. Respect for ones body
  4. Service
  5. Integrity

The most important standard of all is putting God first and striving to be like He is. This is why even the best Saints have to repent every day because becoming like Christ will take our constant effort.

My perspective on enduring to the end is not so much about if I can hang in there until the end of my life. Enduring to the end to me means striving to be like Christ every day and gaining his divine attributes. That will be impossible in this life, therefore I know no matter how righteous I might become I will desperately need repentance every day because there will always be a large gap between where I am and where Christ is. However, I should not become discouraged because of the gap.
