Mercy Through Repentance Overcomes The Demands Of Justice

The Things Of My Soul

Atonement Series

Alma 42: 23; “Mercy claimeth the penitent, and mercy cometh because of the atonement.” (Book Of Mormon)

Mercy is only possible because of Jesus Christ and His atonement. In addition, Mercy is an incredibly comforting and soul healing doctrine, but it is not unconditional and automatic. You receive it through repentance. Otherwise, justice enacts its full penalty. However, mercy overrides justice but only when we repent.

President Eyring several years ago taught that we should ask what we did or did not do every night when we pray. Doing this he said, we ensure we keep current on our repentance.

Similarly, an Apostle said Agency without the atonement is a fatal gift.

Agency would be a fatal gift because it is only because of the atonement that we can pick up the shambles of our life and turn it around. The atonement is also infinite, which means no matter how bad we have wasted our lives, or the wickedness we have done the atonement can repair it. As a result, you can finish strong through Christ's grace. That grace will make up for a life was slow moving or mostly passive.

This world is extremely wicked, but it is a strong testimony to me of the atonement because I know God would not allow anything to get so bad that the atonement can’t repair.

Repentance must match the crime; therefore, the most serious sins will require the most earnest repentance and sacrifice.
