The Mists Of Darkness Represent A Grave And Serious Threat To Families

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 8: 23- "The Mists of Darkness"

Everyone walks through the mists of darkness at some point in their life, even if it is momentarily. You can't avoid it!

These mists of darkness will assault you even when you are on the right path doing the right thing. In Lehi's dream, the only people who made it through the mists are those who held on the rod of iron. That is the word of God and the very key to survival in this world.

Life is a real test!

In my mind the mists of darkness in Lehi's dream of the Tree of Life represent the challenges and trials of life. I think it could also be distractions and interests that mislead us away from our divine destiny. It blinds us to what we should be doing and what is most important. Basically, the mists of darkness are the pull of the world.

These mists of darkness are particularly threatening to the singles. For example, Elder Oaks in a fireside for the mid single adults talked about how easily singles are deceived. As a result, singles can become very selfish. However, his current wife observed that some of the strongest members she knows are single. That might be because her single friends recognize the easiness to be selfish and intentionally go out of their way to overcome it.

Therefore, the challenges and heartaches of singlehood especially at a stage when we should be married with children can either drive us to Christ or turn us to the world through superficial pursuits.

Satan Seeks To Destroy The Family As An Institution

Satan is bound and determined to destroy the family as an institution, but he also wants to destroy your personal family. That is why he is so quick to stir couples up to anger and contention. For example, smoke is what most couples fight over. They rarely fight over the real issue.

Fighting and contention can sure feel like you are in the mists of darkness. This is because once your body starts to heat up with anger you can't see a way out of it but to fight.

However, there is a way out! You can break the cycle.

Your freedom is in the rod of iron (the word of God). In the moment of contention, it might be hard to think about the truth you know. However, if you can it will save you from a lot of heartache and possibly divorce because few marriages can endure chronic contention. Your way out is to come to yourself and remember the word of God which is pure truth. This will not happen if the word has not been written in your heart because in the heated moment you will forget.
