Obedience Is The Key To Protecting Your Family

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 4:1- “let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord.”

How will obedience protect a marriage and family? Sin distances us from God and hardens our hearts making it harder to love. Additionally, sin desensitizes us. This is a problem because being desensitized we don’t feel like we should. Science has shown that watching violence and violent video games increases aggression and hardens us so we are less likely feel compassion.

President Packer said;

“If you feel pressed in and pressured and not free, it may be for one of two reasons. One, if you have lost freedom, possibly it has been through some irresponsible act of your own. Now you must regain it. You may be indentured- indentured to some habits of laziness or indolence; some even become slaves to addictions. The other reason is that maybe if you are not free you have not earned it. Freedom is not a self-preserving gift. It has to be earned, and it has to be protected.”

Obedience is how you free your family!

President Packer also taught;

“Obedience to God can be the very highest expression of independence. Just think of giving to Him the one thing, the one gift, that He would never take… Obedience-that which God will never take by force- he will accept when freely given. And He will then return to you freedom that you can hardly dream of- the freedom to feel and to know, the freedom to do, and the freedom to be, at least a thousandfold more than we offer him. Strangely enough, the key to freedom is obedience.”
