Obedience Increases Your Freedom By Allowing God To Respond You More Personally

Gospel Basics Series: The Gospel Of Jesus Christ

God gave us commandments so we could have greater freedom and experience joy on a deeper level. The commandments do not hold us down. He gave us our agency. He will not force us into His presence. He will not make us live after the manner of happiness.

Obedience is to receive and follow the promptings of the spirit. Obedience is how you obtain personal peace. You prove your love to God by being obedient to Him.

God knows our weaknesses and is patient with us. He knows that some commandments are a lot harder to keep than others. He expects us to keep all of them and not just the easy ones.

Obedience is a condition for receiving God’s blessings. God said through Elder Holland, “God is anxiously waiting for the chance to answer your prayers and fulfill your dreams, just as He always has. But He can’t if you don’t pray, and He can’t if you don’t dream. In short, He can’t if you don’t believe.” Terror, Triumph, And A Wedding Feast.

God also said that He is bound (to grant His promises) when we do what He says, but if we are not obedient He has no obligation to bless us.
