The Work and Labor of Parenting Is Great And Wondrous

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 19:20

“For behold, I have workings in the spirit, which doeth weary me even that all my joints are weak,”

Workings In The Spirit

This reminds me of the verse in D&C that says we should waste and wear out our lives to bring to light the hidden things of darkness. We should also waste and wear out our lives in good parenting because parenting is how we change the world. We should waste and wear out our lives to perfect ourselves so we can influence our children. Ultimately influential people are Godlike. Parents who are Godlike influence their children more than what they teach, even though that is also critical. For example, your teachings of love will mean nothing to your children if you turn around and spank them or deal with them treacherously. Additionally, children pay attention to how the father treats the mother.

What will you do when a child is acting up? I don’t believe we should be spanking our children and, I can’t see how that is helping them in any way. Will they stop doing the bad behavior because we spank them? Possibly, but not likely. Fear and punishment is never the best motivator or discipline method. I am certain that Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father have a better way to discipline.

The Natural Man tendency in us is to succumb to our emotions. If Christ ever got angry it never crossed the line to sin, and never let it get out of control.

Which Doth Weary Me, Even That All My Joints Are Weak

Parenting is a sacred and solemn privilege. If there is anything that should keep us up at night it is the trust that our Heavenly Father has given us to raise His children in righteousness. However, to be a good parent we need a strong marriage.
