The Temples Are The House Of The Lord Where You Obtain Great Personal Spiritual Power And Is How You Save The Dead

Gospel Basics Series: Laws And Ordinances

From the very beginning, God commanded His people to build temples. Why? Temples are God’s certified way of receiving the power of Godliness. There are gifts and blessings of God that you can only receive through the temple. It is also where you receive knowledge from on high.

The temple is not a secret place. It is a sacred and holy place. It is the most holy place on earth. The temple is the bridge between Heaven and earth. The home is the second most holy place.

The temple is the house of the Jesus Christ.

The temple is where you develop the closest relationship with God. It is where you are married for time and eternity. Adult converts must wait one year before they are allowed to enter the temple.

Everything done in the temple is through the Melchizedek Priesthood. The prophets have given you many marvelous personal promises by attending the temple. President Henry B. Eyring once gave a devotional about realizing your full potential. Making and keeping covenants with God in the temple is how you can make the most of your life.

The Lord loves all of Heavenly Father’s children and desires salvation for everyone. Many billions of people lived out their lives without hearing the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ has made it possible for everyone to be saved and receive exaltation, and this includes the dead.

Jesus Christ returned to the spirit world after He was crucified. While there He did some organization. He organized the preaching of the gospel to the dead. These ordinances can only be done on earth. The living perform the ordinances for the dead, giving the dead the opportunity to be saved if they accept the ordinance done for them on earth.

Gordon B. Hinckley a previous prophet of God taught that temple work most resembles the atonement of Jesus Christ. You are literally saving someone who could not save themselves when you do temple work. It is where you learn most about the atonement and gain the greatest power of God.

Much of what we do in this life and how we spend our time has little long-term value. Temple work is eternal, and one powerful way to lay up treasures in heaven, verses laying up treasures on earth that remain on earth when you die.

Church members are asked to specifically focus on performing the saving ordinances for their deceased ancestors. Family history is the work you do to find your dead family members and prepare them for the temple.
