The Power Of The Word of God To Overcome Addiction

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 15: 33

“and if they be filthy it must needs be that they cannot dwell in the kingdom of God; if so, the kingdom of God must be filthy also.”

The Kingdom of God will not allow itself to become polluted or corrupted by filth, which is why it is impossible for a filthy person to reside there.

God will not allow anyone filthy into His Kingdom!

A speaker once said, it is nearly impossible to live in this world without having some impure thoughts, even for people who are trying to live a virtuous life and who do not consume pornography or the polluted media. However, someone actually addicted to pornography have an incredibly hard time with pure thoughts even in short periods.

Pornography saturates a persons brain with filth and someone who is addicted to it swims in a sea of filth. For someone who is in the throngs of pornography addiction, it takes great effort just to go a short period of time during the day with clean thoughts. That is, filthy thoughts dominate an addicted persons mind.

President Faust said, “I believe reading the scriptures is the best washing machine for unclean or uncontrolled thoughts.”

Why is this true?

When you want to talk to God pray but when you want God to talk to you read your scriptures. None of us could have God talk to us too much! This is particularly true for someone with an addiction, especially a sex addiction.

I also support strongly group 12 step program for any addiction. I think this should be used in addition to personal scripture study.

President Nelson said this, “I promise that as you daily immerse yourself in the Book of Mormon, you can be immunized against the evils of the day, even the gripping plague of pornography and other mind numbing addictions.”

“Feasting on the word of God each day is more important than sleep, school, work, television shows, video games, or social media. You may need to reorganize your priorities to provide time for the study of the word of God. If so, do it!” Elder Richard G. Scott

“Our focus must be riveted (immersed) on the Savior and His gospel. It is mentally rigorous to strive to look unto Him in every thought. But when we do, our doubts and fears flee… Our covenants bind us to Him and give us godly power, covenant keeping men and women seek for ways to keep themselves unspotted from the world so there will be nothing blocking their access to His power.” President Nelson.

True doctrine, understood, changes attitude and behavior…The study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior. Preoccupation with unworthy behavior can lead to unworthy behavior. That is why we stress so forcefully the study of the doctrines of the gospel.” Boyd K. Packer October 1986.

“Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost. Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, give peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing.” Elder Richard G. Scott
