The Gift Of The Holy Ghost Testifies Of Jesus Christ And Truth And Is The Sanctifier And Purifier

Gospel Basics Series: The Gospel Of Jesus Christ

There are two types of baptisms, the baptism of the water and baptism of the spirit. The ordinance is not complete until you receive the Holy Ghost, which is known as being baptized by the spirit. Sometimes you receive the Holy Ghost as soon as you are cleaned up after being immersed in water for your baptism. Many baptize on Saturday’s and confirm you a member of the church and give you the Holy Ghost on Sunday’s so the whole congregation can honor you.

You receive the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. Authorized priesthood men put their hands on your head to confirm you a member of the church and give you a personal blessing of comfort, as they are directed by the Holy Ghost.

Receiving the Holy Ghost as a constant companion after it is conferred upon you requires effort on your part. The Holy Ghost is very sensitive toward sin and evil, and will not abide in you if you partake in sin. Satan knows the good the Holy Ghost can do for you. Because of this, Satan will do everything he can to prevent you from feeling the sanctifying influence of the Holy Ghost. Satan knows you will defeat him when you are directed by the Holy Ghost. When people feel the power and influence of the Holy Ghost important and powerful things happen.

The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. The Godhead consists of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. All three are God’s, and all three are distinct individuals. God the Father and Jesus Christ (God the Son) have physical resurrected bodies. The Holy Ghost does not have a body. All of them are one in their mission to save souls.

The Holy Ghost has a cleansing and sanctifying effect upon you. The benefits of the Holy Ghost are many.

  • He testifies of Jesus Christ and helps you understand truth.
  • He gives you spiritual strength and helps you choose the right.
  • He comforts you when you are sorrowful and discouraged.
  • He helps you overcome temptation and trial.
  • He warns you of physical and spiritual danger.
  • When you teach the gospel, He gives you the converting power.
  • The Holy Ghost is one of the most precious gifts you can receive in this life.
  • He is how you feel God’s love for you.
  • Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ give you direction and inspiration through the Holy Ghost.

The authority to give the Holy Ghost was lost for years during the apostasy. It was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The gift of the Holy Ghost is unique to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). It is what sets the LDS church apart from all others. The Holy Ghost is a major reason why the Lord declared that it is “the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth.” (D&C 1:30)
