Roles of Parents In Leaving The Greatest Legacy That Changes The World

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 15:5- “And it came to pass that I was overcome because of my afflictions.”

Family life can be overwhelming at times! The roles of both men and women can be taxing and stressful, and occasionally are overcome with our afflictions. Men and women have different complementary roles. Providing is one of the roles of men and it can be a major stressor. Often, the wife is forced to work to help provide; however, that is not the ideal especially when there is children.

The wife is the nurturer and that is a major responsibility. I feel that the greatest legacy we can leave is raising righteous children who fear God and gain His power to bless the world. To raise children who know where they came from, understand clearly why they are on earth and live accordingly, and who prepare daily for the next life. Our career and business success means nothing compared to this.

For example, I think JST Genesis 14:26, 30-31 is the ultimate success of parenting.

“Now Melchizedek was a man of faith, who wrought righteousness; and when a child he feared God, and stopped the mouths of lions, and quenched the violence of fire.

For God having sworn unto Enoch and unto his seed with an oath by himself; that every one being ordained after this order and calling should have power, by faith, to break mountains, to divide the seas, to dry up waters, to turn them out of their course;

To put at defiance the armies of nations, to divide the earth, to break every band, to stand in the presence of God, to do all things according to his will, according to his command, subdue principalities and powers;…”

President Hinckley teaches that your wife is your greatest asset. For example, she will spend far more time with your children than you will. You both should be united about what influences you allow into the home. All it takes is for one parent to bring the world (darkness) into the home to cause problems.

President Eyring recently gave a General Conference talk about this recently and he said some people might think gaining these powers are impossible; however, we should strive for this.

The home should be a holy and protected place from the wicked world; and where perfect love casteth out all fear. We are beat down enough in the workplace and school. The home must be a place where we are strengthened in the Lord so our children can triumphantly go out into the wicked world. However, bringing the wicked world into the home (mass entertainment, pop culture, mindless internet content) will prevent us from gaining the Lord’s power.

The Holy Ghost is still and small and yet the most powerful influence on this earth.

“And it came to pass that while they were thus conversing one with another, they heard a voice as if it came out of heaven; and they cast their eyes round about, for they understood not the voice which they heard; and it was not a harsh voice, neither was it a loud voice; nevertheless, and notwithstanding it being a small voice it did pierce them that did hear to the center, insomuch that there was no part of their frame that it did not cause to quake; yea, it did pierce them to the very soul, and did cause their hearts to burn.” 3 Nephi 11:3

One drug addict said the love God he felt through the Holy Ghost was 20x stronger than any drug he ever tried. The same is true with mental illness.
