Overcoming Challenges In Marriage

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 12:4- “And it came to pass that I saw a mist of darkness on the face of the land of promise.”

Nobody can avoid the mists of darkness. That is why marriages and families need to make Christ the head and leader.

What are the mists of darkness?

Trials and tribulations certainly make it difficult to see clearly. For example, you might be facing a very serious challenge in your marriage that only the Lord can solve.

Additionally, these mists of darkness also could represent Satan’s false lies and the philosophies of the world. The world’s lies are dangerous because they slap the chains of bondage on you. Satan is the father of all lies and the master deceiver. For instance, he twists and molds lies and forms it into something that looks good and attractive. This is how he deceives the elect into supporting something wicked.

This means that no marriage and family can be complacent. In Lehi’s dream, only those who held steadfastly to the iron rod of iron (the word of God) made it through the mists to the tree of life.

Therefore, a gospel centered home is not optional.

Testimony is not enough to remain at the tree. You must be converted.

What do you do when tragedy strikes your family?

Hold on tighter to the rod and build stronger faith, and start long before the tragedy strikes. For example, the U.S. military wins wars because it is constantly training for war in times of peace. Once the fighting starts the training stops.

Additionally, a family built on light-mindedness (entertainment) does not prepare you for anything difficult. Furthermore, you can’t be light-minded and successfully travel through the mists or endure to the end.
