Trials Make You Stronger

Book of Mormon Marriage And Family Study

1 Nephi 17: 13

“And I will be your light in he wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments.”

I Will Be Your Light In The Wilderness

Jesus Christ is the way and the only way. This is especially true when you are in the middle of a storm. What do you do when life turns dark, very dark, when everything seems against you?

When the Lord commanded Lehi to abandon his home in Jerusalem to travel in the wilderness, it was a blessing in at least two ways. One it saved their life because that city was about to be destroyed because of wickedness and second it was a refiners fire that burned out worldliness. However, Laman and Lemuel didn’t respond so well to the trial of living without their wealth and comforts of life.

I love this teaching by President Thomas S. Monson

“Our Heavenly Father, who gives us so much to delight in, also knows that we learn and grow and become stronger as we face and survive the trials through which we must pass. We know that there are times when we will experience heartbreaking sorrow, when we will grieve, and when we may be tested to our limits. However, such difficulties allow us to change for the better, to rebuild our lives in the way our Heavenly Father teaches us, and to become something different from what we were—better than we were, more understanding than we were, more empathetic than we were, with stronger testimonies than we had before.

This should be our purpose—to persevere and endure, yes, but also to become more spiritually refined as we make our way through sunshine and sorrow. Were it not for challenges to overcome and problems to solve, we would remain much as we are, with little or no progress toward our goal of eternal life.”

Elder Holland in a question and answer session about marriage said you know it is love when your spouse will go through a lot with you. In this case, if your wife is willing to travel in the wilderness with you, she loves you. For example, the prophets teach not to wait until you have money or a degree to get married.

There aren’t many just causes for divorce!
