Major Depression Disorder (MDD) Is A “Crater In The Mind” That Can Be Healed Just Like Broken Bones And Broken Minds Are Healed

Like A Broken Vessel: Elder Jeffrey R. Holland

A lot of people are afflicted with Major Depression Disorder (MDD). If you have it this talk will be a great resource for you. Caregivers for those who have MDD will also find strength. MDD is debilitating for many and life threatening for others if they are suicidal.

You should not feel shame if you have MDD. You shouldn’t feel any stigma for having MDD than suffering from any other physical disease. MDD has afflicted some of the greatest, including Abraham Lincoln a prophet of God and Elder Holland.

Elder Holland identified Major Depression Disorder as:

 • “A dark night of the mind and spirit.”
 • “A crater in the mind.”
 • “The darkest abyss.”

How You Can Fight Depression

Jesus Christ is the answer to everything. Increase your faith in Jesus Christ, and strengthen your relationship with Him. Elder Holland said, “Of greatest assurance in God’s plan is that a Savior was promised, a Redeemer, who through our faith in Him would lift us triumphantly over those tests and trials, even though the cost to do so would be unfathomable for both the Father who sent Him and the Son who came. It is only an appreciation of this divine love that will make our own lesser suffering first bearable, then understandable, and finally redemptive.”

Elder Holland also said, “Broken minds can be healed just the way broken bones and broken hearts are healed.”

See the eternal picture. In the pre-existence you knew life would be hard and you would face extremely difficult challenges. Know that depression will not carry over with you into the next life when you die.

Don’t run faster than you have strength. Pay attention to your stress, and when it is too high, rest up. If you fail to nurture your health now, you will pay the price later with illness.

Life is precious. No matter how hard depression has effected you, don’t end it by suicide. Elder Holland didn’t prescribe a spiritual only remedy for depression. Of course you should pray, fast and read your scriptures for spiritual help. You should also seek out all the gifts and tools available to help you, including professional help.

Some of the other suggestions Elder Holland gave to help you battle depression.

 • Faith
 • Love of God
 • Priesthood leaders
 • Keep a soft heart
 • Increase level of spirit
 • Priesthood blessings
 • Sacrament
 • Believe in miracles
 • Professional councilors
